The NYPD has created a unique counter terrorism and
intelligence gathering capacity to protect New York that
is recognized worldwide. A $1.2 million grant from the
Police Foundation helped establish the Counter
Terrorist Operations Center which serves as the headquarters
for the gathering, analyses and dissemination
of information about threats to NYC.
LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAM
- NYPD personnel received intensive training to increase their proficiency to that of native
speakers in over 60 languages.
- The NYPD has more than 500 certified speakers who are assigned to counter terrorist or
intelligence commands where their language skills are utilized to monitor sources around the
clock and prepare briefings for police management.
- The NYPD's bank of language experts is so vast that other agencies including the Department
of Defense have used their expertise.
SPECIALIZED TRAINING
By bringing experts to the NYPD, police commanders receive specialized training on current needs in global terrorism, leadership skills and adapting business models to policing.
