DEBRIEFING
Recognizing that symptoms of physical and emotional strain can surface many months
after the initial trauma, the NYPD, with a grant from the Police Foundation, held medical
screenings and debriefings for all Ground Zero workers. BULLET RESISTANT VESTS
Until 1997, many officers wore vests that were ineffective against the sophisticated high-caliber
firepower in the hands of many criminals. A fund established by the Police Foundation ensured that 18,000 officers were equipped with improved models that offer superior protection. POLICE SUICIDE AWARENESS
The Police Foundation produced an educational video, "By Their Own Hand," which identified risk factors for suicide among police officers. The training resulted in a significant drop in
police suicides which normally occur at twice the rate of the general population. |
