Over the years the Police Foundation has provided support to the department's specialty
units such as:
MOUNTED UNIT
In the mid 1970's, New York City experienced severe financial hardships. The highly respected
Mounted Unit, which had been in existence for over 100 years, was going to be dismantled.
The city asked the Police Foundation for help. The Mounted Unit was saved and, since 1976,
every horse in the Unit has been donated through the foundation.
CANINE UNIT
This Unit was an invaluable aid in the September 11th rescue mission. Many of the dogs
suffered burns, cuts and bruises from searching through the wreckage, and all were
exhausted. The Police Foundation has assisted the NYPD in purchasing dogs and providing
proper housing, care, training and transportation.
BOMB SQUAD
Donations of dogs and equipment assist this prestigious unit to fight crime.
HARBOR UNIT
A new 35 ft. boat was added through the generosity of a donor to the Police Foundation.
